W705,Sony Ericsson new Walkman phone and Bluetooth speakers

The latest handphone from Sony Ericsson’s walkman series is the W705, a clone of their C705 series which, while isn’t as cool as the Sony Ericsson phone used in James Bond, has its own charm and style that appeals to generations of young adults out there.

Walkman phone

Sony has a history of porting over their other series phones into the W-series, slap on some Walkman software on it and sell it to you at a higher price. It all began back during the days of the successful K750i model, upon which they made the W800i which is based exactly on the same internal structure as the K750i, albeit with a different outer casing. Most people hated the orange styling and went for a K750i instead and then flashed the firmware to the Walkman series. And today you can do exactly the same and avoid paying a hefty premium for the Walkman series altogether.

But since then, the Walkman series have toned down on the aggressive styling a little bit. The W705 is a looker though, with the brushed metal look and hints of gold chrome around its side, displaying its generous 2.4-inch screen to the world in a slim profile that fits snugly into your pocket. As this is a music device, there is plenty of features such as PlayNow, SenseMe, and the shaking control, in additional the usual goodies such as WiFi, 3.2MP camera, Google Maps and of course, FM radio. It’s pretty much the standard stuff you’d expect in a slightly upscale phone these days.

Home audio system

But wait, that’s not all. Sony Ericsson is also launching their Home Audio System which is wireless and looks a lot like a beach ball. The stereo speakers (that’s what they are, not that great right?) are wonderful in that you can stream your music wirelessly using Bluetooth, all 2.1 channels of it to have it played by the ‘Home Audio System’. Music quality is still suspicious, but I’m sure for regular folks without great expectations of their stereo equipment, the wireless feature will be a great draw.

    Sony Ericsson Walkman Phones History

After losing a large part of the market to other companies, Sony last attempt to revive the Walkman brand involves a series of music centered on mobile phones marketed under the brand name Sony Ericsson.

Unlike most online Walkman, Sony Ericsson Walkman Phones do not support, and therefore can not play, owned by Sony ATRAC audio format (with all its variants). Walkman phones do support AAC and MP3.

The W800 and W550/W600 have many audio capabilities including lists of audio playback Equalization, support for M4A audio file format, and the ability to function only as a music player, with the electronic phone off. It also includes mobile standard features like a 2-megapixel auto-focus camera. The W550/W600 has 256 MB of internal memory, while the W800 includes a 512 MB Memory Stick.

The W810 is a Quad-EDGE enabled phone band launched in response to a request by black Walkman Phone. Other than minor changes in the software and hardware, most similar characteristics to those of the W800.

Sony Ericsson also launched the W900 (considered the successor to the S700), which in addition to audio and camera capabilities W800, also has 3G video calls and streaming, improved video recording ( 30 frames per second), a larger display, and 470 MB of internal memory that can be extended up to 2 GB. Music can be imported from a variety of sources, either by the wireless service provider or a personal computer.

Sony Ericsson President Miles Flint, who claims to have sold over three million Walkman phones, introduced their sixth Walkman brand phone, the W950, the 3GSM Congress in 2006. The W950i is a thin device with 4 GB of internal flash memory, including a touch screen for navigation through music genres, playlists, songs or music albums. It is also the first Symbian OS-based Walkman phone to be put in place.

In 2006, Sony Ericsson has announced yet another Walkman phone, the W300. It is the first Walkman phone in the series in a "flip phone" form factor. The W300 is also the first Walkman phone support Memory Stick Micro and has a VGA camera. They have also launched their 8th Walkman phone, the W700. It is essentially a stripped-down version of the W800 with a different color, and includes a 256 MB Memory Stick. The other major change is the lack of auto-focus on board the aircraft.

May 18, 2006, saw the introduction of two other Walkman phones, a second clamshell model, W710, and the first slider, W850i.

In February 2007, the W880 was announced and released. It has a design that is only 9.4 mm thick and a metal plate face. Being one of the smallest phones on the market, it has proved very popular.

The popularity of the Walkman-brand phone May be an indication that the portable audio and mobile telephony markets are beginning to converge. Walkman phones are equipped with applications such as track ID, PlayNow and M-Buzz and, from June 2007 Sony Ericsson claims to have sold over 26.5 million Walkman phones since the launch in September 2005. Sony Ericsson is considered to have had more success with music and the convergence of mobile phones, largely attributed to the Walkman heritage and expertise from Sony.
